Ornithogalum mosaic is a severe viral disease caused by the Ornithogalum mosaic virus (OmV), a member of the Potyvirus genus. As a systemic pathogen, it infects the internal tissues of the plant, significantly interfering with normal metabolic functions, photosynthesis, and development, which ultimately compromises both the health and aesthetic value of the affected crops.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Asparagaceae family, specifically various species of the genus Ornithogalum (Star-of-Bethlehem). However, the virus can also infect other related bulbous plants, such as lilies, tulips, and hyacinths, making it a critical concern for ornamental growers and nurseries where these species are grown in close proximity.

The characteristic symptoms of the infection include a distinct mosaic pattern on the leaves, manifested as irregular patches of light green, yellow, or dark green tissue. Affected plants often exhibit foliage distortion, streaking, or necrosis. Furthermore, growth is frequently stunted, and blooms may show significant color breaking, petal deformation, or reduced flower size, drastically lowering the market quality of the bulbs.

Transmission of the virus typically occurs through two main routes: insect vectors and mechanical contact. Aphids are the primary insect vectors, transmitting the virus while feeding on plant sap. Additionally, mechanical transmission is common during agricultural practices such as pruning, harvesting, or propagating bulbs with contaminated tools, as well as through the usage of infected bulbs that serve as a source of primary inoculum.

Because there is no cure for viral diseases in plants, disease management relies entirely on rigorous preventive practices to curb its spread. Key strategies include:

  • Procuring and planting only certified, virus-free plant materials.
  • Regular inspection of crops to identify and immediately rogue out symptomatic plants.
  • Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid populations.
  • Strict sanitation protocols, including the disinfection of cutting tools with appropriate agents after handling each plant.
  • Maintaining clean cultivation areas by removing weed hosts that may harbor the virus.
