Bean necrosis is a viral disease caused by the pathogen Orthotospovirus phaseolinecrotessellati. As a member of the Tospoviridae family, this virus acts as a systemic pathogen, disrupting the normal physiological processes of the plant and leading to widespread necrosis of leaf and stem tissues.
The primary host for this virus is the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). However, it can also infect various alternative host plants, including common field weeds. These weeds act as reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to persist in the ecosystem and serve as a source for primary infection in new planting cycles.
Key symptoms include the development of chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, and distinctive necrotic lesions on the leaves. In severe cases, infected plants exhibit stunted growth, curled leaves, and withered pods, which significantly impairs the quality and quantity of the harvest.
