Oscillatoria putrida is a species of filamentous cyanobacteria that, under certain environmental conditions, can act as a plant pathogen or a secondary factor contributing to tissue decay. While primarily an aquatic organism, it frequently colonizes moist soil surfaces and plant tissues in agricultural settings, particularly in greenhouse environments.
This organism primarily targets seedlings, vegetables grown in moist substrates, and plants cultivated via hydroponics. It thrives in environments where water drainage is poor and humidity levels remain consistently high. By forming dense mats on the surface, the cyanobacteria impede proper gas exchange between the roots and the atmosphere, negatively impacting plant health.
Symptoms of an Oscillatoria putrida infestation include the appearance of dark, gelatinous films on the soil surface or the basal parts of stems. As the colony develops, the tissues in contact with the slime begin to rot and decompose, often emitting a distinct, pungent odor. Infested plants typically show stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and, in severe cases, total wilting and death.
The spread of this pathogen is accelerated by excessive irrigation, lack of soil aeration, and the presence of stagnant water. Since it is highly mobile in wet conditions, it can spread quickly throughout an entire production area via shared irrigation systems or contaminated agricultural tools used for cultivation and harvesting.
