The family Paenibacillaceae includes various bacteria that, in an agricultural context, are recognized for their potential to act as plant pathogens. While some species serve as beneficial biological controls, others possess virulent properties that lead to systemic bacterial infections, compromising crop health and drastically reducing yield quality and quantity.
The causal agent is typically a spore-forming bacterium. This biological characteristic enables the pathogen to persist in agricultural soils for extended periods, making it difficult to eradicate once a field is contaminated. The disease type is classified as a bacterial blight or wilt, where the pathogen enters through root lesions or wounds, colonizing the vascular tissues of the host plant.
A wide range of crops is susceptible, including major field crops and horticultural plants. Initial signs of infection often involve localized browning or necrosis at the base of the stem or root system. As the disease progresses, plants exhibit wilting during the hottest part of the day, followed by stunted development, yellowing of foliage, and, in severe cases, plant collapse.
The development and spread of Paenibacillus species are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as soil saturation, poor drainage, and high humidity levels. Agricultural practices like improper irrigation or using contaminated equipment facilitate the rapid spread of the bacteria across fields. Furthermore, soil compaction and underlying insect damage provide easy access points for bacterial entry.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to maintain crop health. Key preventive measures involve selecting certified disease-free seeds and practicing crop rotation to reduce the pathogen load in the soil. Furthermore, improving soil drainage and monitoring field equipment for hygiene helps limit the spread of the bacteria. Application of targeted bactericides and maintaining optimal soil pH can further suppress pathogen activity.
