Description
Lethal yellowing is a devastating systemic disease affecting various palm species, caused by specialized phytoplasmas. These prokaryotic pathogens reside in the phloem tissue of the host plant, effectively disrupting the vascular system and preventing the translocation of photoassimilates, which eventually leads to the death of the tree.
The disease primarily targets coconut palms but is known to affect over thirty species of palm trees, including ornamental varieties widely used in landscaping. Its rapid progression often leads to the loss of large populations within a relatively short period, posing a significant threat to agriculture and biodiversity in tropical regions.
The early symptoms of lethal yellowing typically include the premature drop of all fruits, regardless of their maturity, and the blackening of flower inflorescences. As the infection progresses, the foliage starts to yellow, starting from the lower fronds and spreading upward until the spear leaf dies, which signifies the terminal phase of the disease.
Transmission of the pathogen is mediated by insect vectors, specifically planthoppers like Myndus crudus. These insects acquire the phytoplasma by feeding on the phloem sap of infected trees and subsequently inoculate healthy palms during their feeding process. The environmental factors that favor the breeding and movement of these insects directly influence the rate of disease spread.
Currently, there is no cure for trees that have been fully colonized by the pathogen. Therefore, management efforts focus primarily on preventing new infections and eradicating reservoirs of the disease. This includes strict phytosanitary measures, the planting of resistant or tolerant cultivars, and the chemical control of the insect vector populations to break the cycle of transmission.
