Pantoea allii is a bacterial pathogen responsible for significant yield losses in onion crops worldwide. This disease is classified as a soft rot or bacterial blight, which affects plants both in the field and during post-harvest storage. It is recognized as a major challenge for commercial onion producers.
The primary host for this pathogen is the common onion (Allium cepa). The bacteria can be introduced into a production system through infested seeds, contaminated soil, or infected plant debris. Insects, such as thrips, often act as vectors, wounding the leaves and facilitating the entry of bacteria into the plant tissues.
Visible symptoms typically include translucent or water-soaked lesions on the foliage. As the infection progresses, leaves may wilt and turn necrotic. In bulbs, the disease manifests as interior decay, where individual scales become mushy, discolored, and emit a foul odor. Often, internal rotting is not visible from the outside until the bulb is sliced.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rainfall or overhead irrigation often spreads the bacteria across the field. Once the crop is harvested, poor curing practices and lack of proper ventilation in storage facilities create an environment where Pantoea allii can thrive and spread rapidly between bulbs.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize the use of disease-free, certified seeds and practice long crop rotation cycles. Managing insect populations is critical to minimize wound sites. Furthermore, ensuring that onions are thoroughly dried (cured) before storage and maintaining a cool, dry, and well-ventilated storage environment are the most effective strategies for preventing post-harvest loss.
