Description
Pantoea cypripedii is a Gram-negative bacterium that primarily acts as a plant pathogen, causing severe bacterial leaf spot and brown rot, most notably in orchid species. Formerly classified within the genus Erwinia, it is recognized as a significant threat in commercial orchid nurseries and private collections worldwide.
The primary host range includes various orchid genera, including Paphiopedilum (slipper orchids) and Cypripedium. The infection is systemic in nature if not controlled early, spreading from the leaves to the pseudobulbs or the crown of the orchid, eventually causing total plant collapse.
Symptoms typically begin as small, water-soaked, translucent spots on the leaves. As the bacterial population expands, these spots darken, become depressed, and turn dark brown or black. The affected area becomes soft and watery, often emitting a distinct foul odor, which distinguishes this condition from common fungal diseases.
The development and spread of Pantoea cypripedii are highly dependent on high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Rain splashing or overhead watering carries the bacteria from plant to plant, and the pathogen enters the host tissues through wounds, stomata, or natural openings, especially after damage from pests or mechanical handling.
Management focuses on rigorous sanitation and environmental manipulation. Infected plants must be isolated or discarded to prevent outbreaks. Growers should ensure good air circulation to promote rapid drying of foliage and avoid excessive irrigation. While copper-based bactericides may provide some protective benefits, strict hygiene and controlled environmental conditions remain the most effective methods for managing this bacterial disease.
