Pasteurellales represents an order of bacteria that, in a phytopathological context, are associated with severe vascular necrosis. These pathogens invade the xylem of the plant, disrupting the transport of water and nutrients, which leads to sudden wilting and eventual death of the affected plant tissue.

This group of bacteria affects various vegetable crops and greenhouse plants, often compromising the health of the entire field. The bacteria enter the plant through natural openings or wounds caused by insect vectors, agricultural machinery, or pruning tools, establishing a systemic infection.

The visual symptoms typically include chlorosis, followed by rapidly spreading dark, oily spots on stems and leaves. A diagnostic feature is the presence of a bacterial ooze that can be seen when a damaged stem is cut and placed in water, indicating the presence of active bacterial colonies within the vascular bundles.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, poor aeration, and moderate to high temperatures create the ideal environment for the multiplication of these pathogens. The disease spreads rapidly through rain splash, contaminated irrigation water, and the movement of insects across the crop canopy.

Crop losses due to this disease can be devastating, making early detection and prevention essential. Management strategies involve the use of resistant varieties, maintaining optimal irrigation schedules to prevent moisture stress, and applying copper-based bactericides for prevention. Sanitation of farm equipment and prompt removal of infected plants are vital to limiting spread.
