Description
Paulownia witches broom is a destructive plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized, wall-less bacteria that inhabit the phloem of infected plants. These pathogens severely disrupt the host's physiological processes, specifically the movement of nutrients and hormonal signaling.
The disease primarily targets the genus Paulownia, including all commercially grown species used for fast-growing timber production. Infected trees exhibit significantly reduced growth rates, poor timber quality, and, in severe cases, death, leading to substantial economic losses in forest plantations.
The characteristic symptom that gives the disease its name is the formation of dense clusters of thin, stunted shoots arising from dormant buds. These "brooms" are often accompanied by leaf yellowing (chlorosis), smaller-than-normal leaves, and shortened internodes, which drastically alter the tree's architecture.
Transmission occurs through sap-sucking insects, most notably leafhoppers, which act as vectors. As these insects feed, they inject the phytoplasma into the host plant's phloem. Furthermore, the disease can be introduced to new areas via infected nursery stock, making the origin of seedlings a critical factor.
Currently, there is no chemical cure for phytoplasma-infected trees. Management focuses entirely on preventative strategies: removing and destroying symptomatic trees immediately, ensuring the use of certified disease-free propagation material, and implementing rigorous integrated pest management to control insect vector populations within the plantation.
