Description
Pea enation mosaic is a significant viral disease caused by the Pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV), which poses a serious threat to the production of peas and other legumes. The virus systemically infects the plant host, causing severe physiological changes that lead to stunted growth and reduced crop yields.
The virus is primarily transmitted by various aphid species, most notably the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). Transmission occurs in a persistent manner, meaning the aphid acquires the virus after feeding on infected plant sap and remains capable of transmitting it to healthy plants for a significant portion of its lifespan.
Symptoms are highly diagnostic and include the development of outgrowths known as enations, which appear as ridges or protrusions on the undersides of leaves and along the veins. Infected plants exhibit a bright chlorotic mosaic pattern, leaf curling, and overall dwarfing. The reproductive stages are also impacted, resulting in pod malformation and seed shriveling.
The spread and severity of the disease are dictated by the population dynamics of the aphid vectors. Environmental factors such as mild temperatures favor both the rapid multiplication of aphids and the efficiency of virus transmission. Reservoirs of the virus, such as perennial legumes and various weeds, play a critical role in maintaining the disease cycle over seasons.
Management strategies focus on minimizing the impact of the vector and eliminating sources of infection. Key approaches include:
- Implementing spatial isolation from perennial legume crops.
- Using aphid-resistant or tolerant pea cultivars.
- Applying systemic insecticides to control aphid populations during the early stages of plant development.
- Strategic early planting to avoid peak aphid migration periods.
