Description

Peach rosette is a severe disease associated with phytoplasma infection that causes systemic damage to stone fruit trees. This condition is characterized by dramatic physiological changes that stunt tree development and eventually lead to the decline and death of the infected host.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include peach, nectarine, almond, and several other Prunus species. The disease interferes with the tree's vascular system, disrupting the distribution of nutrients and water, which prevents the tree from maintaining its structural integrity and reproductive functions.

The hallmark symptom is the extreme shortening of internodes, resulting in leaves forming dense, rosette-like clusters. The foliage often displays chlorosis and premature curling. Because the plant's metabolic processes are severely compromised, the tree fails to produce viable fruit, and its overall lifespan is significantly shortened.

Transmission of the disease primarily occurs through infected grafting materials or via insect vectors, such as leafhoppers, which spread the pathogen from tree to tree. Poor orchard hygiene and the introduction of uncertified nursery stock are the most common ways the disease enters and establishes itself in a new area.

There is no chemical cure for trees infected with peach rosette. Therefore, management strategies rely heavily on strict prevention: removing and destroying infected trees immediately to prevent further spread, controlling insect vectors with systemic insecticides, and ensuring that only certified, disease-free nursery stock is used for planting.
