Description

Pecan bunch is a significant phytoplasmal disease affecting pecan trees (Carya illinoinensis). This disorder interferes with the hormonal balance and nutrient transport within the tree, leading to severe physiological dysfunction and structural changes in the canopy.

The causative agent of this disease is a phytoplasma, which is transmitted by phloem-feeding insects such as leafhoppers. Once introduced into the tree, the pathogen colonizes the vascular system, effectively hijacking the plant's resources to favor the abnormal growth of dense vegetative clusters.

The disease primarily affects pecan trees in commercial orchards and residential settings. While it does not kill the tree immediately, the cumulative effect of the pathogen severely reduces the tree's vigor, growth rate, and overall nut production, rendering the plantation economically unviable over time.

Symptoms are distinct and recognizable: the formation of dense, broom-like clusters of thin, stunted, and upright branches. Leaves within these clusters are often chlorotic, smaller than normal, and may drop prematurely. Affected limbs show reduced apical dominance, leading to a sprawling, unhealthy appearance.

Management strategies focus on strict sanitation, as no chemical cure for phytoplasma exists. This involves the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic trees to limit the spread of the pathogen. Additionally, controlling the populations of leafhopper vectors through targeted insecticide applications is essential for long-term orchard protection.

Adopting integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including monitoring for insect vectors and maintaining proper tree nutrition, can help minimize the risk. Planting certified disease-free nursery stock is the most important preventive measure to avoid the introduction of Pecan bunch into new areas.
