Description
Pectobacterium actinidiae is a dangerous phytopathogenic bacterial agent that causes severe vascular and necrotic lesions in plants. This disease belongs to the group of bacterioses and can quickly lead to the destruction of entire orchards, especially in regions with a climate favorable to the pathogen.
The primary host crop for this disease is Chinese actinidia and delicious actinidia, commonly known as kiwifruit. The bacterium affects both young seedlings in nurseries and mature, fruit-bearing vines, making it a major concern in commercial fruit production.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as the appearance of water-soaked spots on the leaves, which darken and necrotize rapidly. In advanced stages, characteristic damage to stems and petioles occurs, accompanied by bacterial exudation and internal tissue rot, which obstructs the plant's vascular system and leads to wilting.
The development and spread of the disease are promoted by high humidity, moderately warm temperatures, and the presence of wounds on the plant surface. The pathogen is easily transmitted via contaminated pruning tools, infected nursery stock, and can also be spread by rain splashes and insect pests that cause mechanical damage to the plant epidermis.
The economic impact of this bacteriosis involves irreversible crop loss and the premature death of perennial plantings. Control measures include strictly maintaining phytosanitary conditions: utilizing disease-free planting material, regular disinfection of pruning equipment, prompt removal and destruction of infected plants, and restricting overhead irrigation to lower humidity in the root zone.
