Pathogen and disease type: Pectobacterium betavasculorum is a phytopathogenic bacterium that causes vascular necrosis and soft rot in beet crops. This pathogen secretes a complex of cell wall-degrading enzymes, specifically pectinases, which lead to the collapse of tissue integrity and severe maceration of the root tissues.

Crops and economic impact: This pathogen primarily attacks sugar beet, table beet, and fodder beet. The economic losses are significant, as infected roots become unsuitable for processing or storage. In storage facilities, the disease can rapidly spread, resulting in total loss of stored batches and reducing the overall sugar content of the harvested crop.

Symptoms and signs of infection: Initial symptoms include wilting and yellowing of the leaves, which may occur on one side of the plant first. A cross-section of the root reveals discolored, dark-brown or black vascular bundles.
