Description
Blackleg of potato is a severe bacterial disease caused by the pathogen Pectobacterium brasiliense. As a member of the soft rot group, this bacterium secretes enzymes that break down plant cell walls, leading to the rapid decay of stems and tubers.
While the potato plant is the primary host, Pectobacterium brasiliense can infect various other vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, and cruciferous crops. The pathogen typically survives in contaminated soil, debris, and, most importantly, in infected seed tubers, which serve as the primary source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.
The symptoms are highly distinctive: early stages involve yellowing of the foliage and wilting of the stems. As the disease progresses, the base of the stem turns black and becomes soft or slimy. In advanced stages, the entire plant collapses, and tubers can turn into a foul-smelling, mushy mass, rendering the crop entirely unsuitable for consumption or storage.
The spread of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions. High soil moisture levels and frequent rainfall, combined with warm temperatures, create an optimal environment for the bacteria to colonize plant tissues. The pathogen can easily spread through water runoff, contaminated farming tools, or insect vectors that wound the potato tissues.
Control measures must focus on prevention, as there are no effective curative treatments for infected plants. Essential strategies include sourcing certified disease-free seed tubers, implementing a long-term crop rotation (3-4 years), and ensuring excellent soil drainage. Proper storage hygiene, disinfection of harvesting equipment, and careful management of pests are also critical in minimizing the impact of this aggressive pathogen.
