Description

The disease is caused by the bacterium Pectobacterium cacticida, a specialized pathogen known for causing severe soft rot in succulent plants. This bacterium secretes pectinolytic enzymes that break down the middle lamellae of plant cells, leading to the rapid liquefaction of the host tissue. It is a highly aggressive pathogen that can cause total destruction of a cactus within a very short period.

This pathogen affects a wide variety of Cactaceae species. It is particularly dangerous in nursery settings and home collections where high-density planting and environmental conditions favor bacterial growth. Infection usually starts at wounds caused by transplanting, pruning, or insect feeding, which serve as entry points for the bacteria to colonize the interior succulent tissues.

Symptoms often manifest as water-soaked lesions that rapidly expand and turn dark or necrotic. As the infection progresses, the internal tissues of the cactus soften and collapse, often turning into a foul-smelling, slimy mass. In many cases, the plant may suddenly tip over or collapse entirely, indicating that the vascular and structural integrity of the stem has been completely compromised by the bacterial activity.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the development and spread of Pectobacterium cacticida. High relative humidity, poor air circulation, and overwatering are the primary triggers for an outbreak. The bacteria can easily move through water splashes during irrigation, as well as via contaminated tools used for pruning or grafting. Once introduced, the pathogen can spread through a collection if infected plants are not promptly removed.

The damage caused by this disease is usually fatal, making prevention the only viable management strategy. Once the rot reaches the core, recovery is typically impossible. Integrated management practices include maintaining strict hygiene protocols, using well-draining potting mixes, and ensuring proper ventilation. Gardeners should always sterilize cutting tools between plants, monitor for signs of pest damage, and immediately discard any plant showing signs of soft rot to protect the rest of the collection.
