Pectobacterium carnegieana

Description

The disease known as bacterial soft rot is caused by the phytopathogenic bacterium Pectobacterium carnegieana. This pathogen is highly specialized in attacking succulent tissues. It secretes aggressive enzymes that degrade the pectin holding plant cells together, causing the tissue to collapse into a soft, mushy, and often foul-smelling mass.

The primary hosts of this bacterium are species of the Cactaceae family. It is particularly notorious for causing severe damage to the Saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) in its native habitat, though it frequently affects various ornamental cacti species grown in greenhouse conditions or residential collections when environmental stress occurs.

Early symptoms include water-soaked, translucent spots on the surface of the stem or pads. These spots expand rapidly under favorable conditions. As the infection progresses, the inner tissues decompose completely, often leaving only the outer epidermal skin. In many cases, the plant may collapse internally before any external signs of distress become obvious to the grower.

The development of the disease is strictly linked to environmental conditions. High humidity, poor air circulation, and improper soil drainage create an ideal breeding ground for the bacteria. The pathogen usually gains entry through wounds caused by insects, mechanical handling, or excessive succulent growth that leads to natural cracking of the stem cuticle.

Management of the disease involves strict sanitation and environmental control. Growers must ensure that cacti are grown in well-draining soil and are not overwatered. If rot is detected, surgical removal of the affected area is necessary, extending well into healthy green tissue. All tools must be sterilized after each cut to prevent cross-contamination within the collection.
