Pectobacterium versatile is a significant bacterial plant pathogen responsible for causing soft rot disease in a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. This bacterium utilizes a highly efficient enzymatic mechanism, secreting pectinases that degrade the middle lamella between plant cell walls, leading to the maceration of tissues and total structural collapse of the affected plant organ.
The host range of Pectobacterium versatile is extensive, including major crops such as potatoes, onions, carrots, cucumbers, and various brassicas. It acts as an opportunistic pathogen that can infect plants during any stage of growth, although it is most notoriously destructive during the post-harvest period when produce is stored in conditions that favor bacterial proliferation.
Symptoms of infection are characterized by rapid tissue breakdown, resulting in a mushy, water-soaked appearance often accompanied by a foul odor due to secondary colonization by other microbes. In potatoes and other root vegetables, the disease manifests as spreading, sunken lesions that quickly turn into soft rot, potentially causing significant losses within storage facilities if left unchecked.
