Description
The causative agent of the disease is the Gram-negative bacterium Pectobacterium wasabiae, a member of the Pectobacteriaceae family. It is a highly destructive phytopathogen known for causing soft rot in a wide range of vegetable crops. The bacterium produces an array of plant cell wall-degrading enzymes, specifically pectinases, which liquefy plant tissues by destroying the middle lamella between cells.
This pathogen has a broad host range, primarily affecting crops such as potatoes, onions, carrots, horseradish, and various cruciferous vegetables. Infection typically occurs through natural openings, such as lenticels or stomata, or through mechanical wounds caused by harvesting equipment, environmental stress, or insect activity. Once inside, the bacterium multiplies rapidly, colonizing intercellular spaces.
Symptoms of Pectobacterium wasabiae infection include rapid softening and maceration of plant tissues. Infected tubers or roots often show water-soaked, oily lesions that progress to a complete breakdown of internal structure into a foul-smelling, mushy rot. Under high humidity conditions, bacterial exudate may be visible on the surface, which aids in the spread of the infection to adjacent healthy tissues.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the disease. The pathogen thrives in warm conditions (20°C to 30°C) and high humidity. Poor drainage in fields, excessive irrigation, and lack of air circulation in storage facilities are major contributing factors. The bacterium persists in soil, plant debris, and infected seed material, acting as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.
The economic impact of this pathogen is significant due to severe yield losses in the field and extensive decay during post-harvest storage. Integrated management practices are essential to mitigate damage:
