Peptococcus niger is a bacterium that, while primarily known in medical microbiology, can act as a pathogen or opportunistic agent in plant pathology. In agricultural settings, it is often associated with the breakdown of plant tissues, particularly when the host plant is stressed or damaged, leading to specific types of bacterial decay.

The disease is classified as a bacterial infection. The pathogen enters the plant through wounds caused by weather events, handling, or insect activity. Once inside, it utilizes bacterial enzymes to colonize the plant tissue, resulting in a systemic response that weakens the plant's structural integrity and metabolism.
