Peptostreptococcaceae is a family of anaerobic gram-positive bacteria that, while primarily known in clinical settings, play a significant role in plant pathology as secondary invaders or agents of decomposition. These organisms thrive in environments where oxygen levels are low, making them prevalent in waterlogged or poorly aerated agricultural soils.
These bacteria impact various agricultural crops, particularly affecting roots, tubers, and basal stem tissues. They are opportunistic pathogens, typically entering plant tissues through physical wounds, insect damage, or stress-induced micro-cracks in the plant epidermis. Once established, they can contribute to severe tissue degradation.
Symptoms of infection often include the rapid onset of soft rot, accompanied by the discoloration of tissue and the emission of volatile organic compounds, which produce a distinct odor. In many cases, these bacteria work in synergy with other soft-rot pathogens, accelerating the decay process and compromising the structural integrity of the crop.
The development of these bacteria is strictly dependent on environmental conditions. Factors such as high soil moisture content, compaction, and lack of oxygen are the primary drivers for the proliferation of Peptostreptococcaceae. They are particularly destructive in fields with poor drainage systems and in storage environments where aeration is insufficient.
Control and prevention depend heavily on sound agronomic practices. Essential measures include improving soil drainage to prevent anaerobic pockets, practicing effective crop rotation, and minimizing physical plant injury during cultivation. Post-harvest management must focus on dry, well-ventilated storage conditions to prevent the activation and spread of these anaerobic organisms.
