Peptostreptococcosis is a bacterial plant disease caused by anaerobic gram-positive bacteria belonging to the genus Peptostreptococcus. In agronomic contexts, this pathogen is recognized for its role in inducing decay in plant tissues, particularly when environmental factors favor anaerobic respiration and tissue softening.

The disease is categorized under bacterial rots. The pathogen thrives in low-oxygen environments, where it releases enzymatic complexes that dissolve middle lamellae of plant cells. This destructive activity leads to the loss of tissue structural integrity and the subsequent decomposition of plant organs.

Target crops primarily include root vegetables and succulent plant parts such as potatoes, onions, and various field crops. The bacteria are most damaging when crops are stressed by waterlogging or have physical wounds that provide an entry point for the infection from the soil or storage environment.
