Peptostreptococcus indolicus is a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that acts as an opportunistic agent in the degradation of plant tissues. While predominantly known in veterinary medicine, in an agronomic context, it contributes to the development of poly-microbial soft rot complexes. It thrives in environments where primary pathogens have already compromised the host's integrity.

The disease manifested by this organism is generally classified as bacterial soft rot. The bacteria utilize the decomposition products of other microorganisms to accelerate the breakdown of plant cellulose and pectin. This type of damage is commonly observed in roots, tubers, and fruits that are in close proximity to the soil surface under high humidity levels.

Visible symptoms include soft, water-soaked tissue lesions that eventually turn dark or black. A foul odor is often associated with the breakdown of proteins and other organic matter by the bacterial consortium. Affected plants show signs of chlorosis, wilting, and total collapse, particularly in waterlogged nursery environments or greenhouses.

Environmental conditions are the primary driver of its spread. The bacteria require anaerobic conditions, which are created by poor soil drainage, excessive rainfall, or irrigation mismanagement. High soil temperatures further accelerate the metabolic activity of these bacteria, leading to rapid tissue disintegration and significant loss of biomass.

Preventative measures are essential for managing this pathogen. Improving soil aeration through deep cultivation, subsoiling, or raised bed systems helps to disrupt the anaerobic environment. Furthermore, maintaining crop hygiene and ensuring rapid drying of the soil surface between irrigations is crucial. The use of biological control agents that compete for space and nutrients can also mitigate the colonization of tissues.
