Description

Phormidium is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria that, in an agricultural context, acts as a pest or pathogen causing the formation of slimy, dark mats on soil and plant surfaces. These organisms, often referred to as blue-green algae, can significantly disrupt horticultural operations by coating substrates and hindering plant development.

These organisms primarily affect greenhouse crops, nursery seedlings, and hydroponic systems. The presence of Phormidium is most critical in high-moisture environments where nutrient-rich media provide a perfect substrate for the colonization of these filamentous colonies, eventually choking out young roots or emerging seedlings.

The visual symptoms of an infestation include the appearance of dark green, bluish, or black slippery mats on the surface of the soil or growing media. As the surface dries out, this mat forms a thick, brittle crust that seals the soil surface, prevents gas exchange, and interferes with the uptake of water and nutrients by the plants.

Conditions favorable for the development of Phormidium include high humidity, waterlogging, poor air circulation, and an excess of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. Because they are photosynthetic, high light intensity in modern greenhouse environments further accelerates the rapid spread and thickening of these algal mats.

Management and prevention require a multi-faceted approach to modify the microclimate and soil conditions:

  • Improving soil aeration through regular light cultivation of the surface.
  • Ensuring optimal drainage to prevent standing water on benches or floors.
  • Increasing ventilation to lower ambient humidity and dry the surface.
  • Implementing strict hygiene practices to sanitize benches and equipment.
  • Using targeted algaecides where infestation levels threaten the health of the crop.
