Phormium yellow is a destructive plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria that lack cell walls. These pathogens inhabit the phloem tissue of the host plant, severely disrupting the translocation of photoassimilates and essential nutrients, which ultimately leads to systemic chlorosis.
The disease primarily affects Phormium tenax, commonly known as New Zealand flax. This plant is widely used in landscaping and textile fiber production, making the occurrence of Phormium yellow a significant economic and aesthetic concern for growers and nursery managers.
Symptoms typically manifest as a gradual yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves, often starting at the tips and progressing downward. Affected plants show signs of stunted growth, a decrease in fiber quality, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of the foliage, rendering the plants unsuitable for ornamental purposes.
The transmission of Phormium yellow is primarily mediated by insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers. These insects acquire the phytoplasma by feeding on infected plant sap and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of leafhoppers facilitate the spread of the pathogen within plantations.
