Description
Phyllobacteriosis is a bacterial plant disease caused by microorganisms from the Phyllobacteriaceae family. While these bacteria are commonly found in the plant environment, certain pathogenic strains can invade plant tissues, disrupting vital physiological functions and leading to severe disease outbreaks in various agricultural systems.
The causative agent enters the plant through wounds or natural openings such as stomata. Once inside, the bacteria colonize the intercellular space and multiply rapidly. They secrete specific enzymes that break down plant cell walls, leading to tissue softening, maceration, and the eventual collapse of the affected plant structure.
A wide variety of crops can be affected by phyllobacteriosis, particularly those grown in high-density environments or under greenhouse conditions. Development of the disease is heavily favored by prolonged periods of high humidity, overhead irrigation, and stagnant air, which allow the bacteria to move easily across the leaf surfaces.
Symptoms typically begin with small, water-soaked, or oily-appearing spots on leaves. Over time, these spots expand, change color to brown or black, and may become surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, wilting, and, in severe cases, dieback of entire branches or the whole plant.
