Plasmopara halstedii
Description
Downy mildew is a major disease of sunflowers caused by the oomycete Plasmopara halstedii. It is a systemic infection that can compromise plant health from the seedling stage through to maturity, significantly reducing yields and impacting seed quality.
The pathogen produces oospores, which are microscopic resting structures capable of surviving in the soil for up to eight years. These oospores are the primary source of infection, especially when soil moisture is high, allowing the zoospores to mobilize and penetrate the roots of young seedlings.
Common symptoms include stunted plant growth, shortened internodes, and the appearance of chlorotic patches on leaves. In conditions of high humidity, a dense white or grayish downy growth becomes visible on the underside of the leaves, indicating active sporulation of the pathogen.
The disease development is heavily dependent on soil temperature and moisture. Cool, wet conditions during the planting season create an optimal environment for infection. The pathogen can also spread via wind-borne sporangia, although soil-borne infection remains the most significant threat to commercial fields.
Control measures primarily involve the use of genetically resistant sunflower hybrids, which is the most effective approach against various races of the pathogen. Seed treatment with systemic fungicides is also essential to protect the seedlings during the critical early growth phase. Additionally, implementing long crop rotations and ensuring proper soil drainage help manage the inoculum density in the field.
