Powdery mildew of cereals

Cereal spp.

Description

Powdery mildew of cereals, caused by the obligate parasite Blumeria graminis, is one of the most prevalent fungal diseases affecting small grain crops worldwide. The pathogen attacks all aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and spikes, significantly impacting the physiology of the crop during its peak growth stages.

This disease primarily infects winter wheat, winter barley, and rye. While maize is less commonly impacted, it can also become susceptible under high-humidity conditions and high-density planting. The fungus consists of specific forms that are specialized to infect particular cereal species, making variety selection a critical component of integrated pest management.

Initial symptoms manifest as white, cottony, powder-like patches on the leaf surface, which eventually darken and thicken. As the infection progresses, black fungal fruiting bodies called cleistothecia develop within the mycelium. Infection of the spike leads to shriveled grains, reduced test weight, and poor quality of the harvested produce.

The development of the disease is highly favored by moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C and high relative humidity. Conditions such as excessive nitrogen fertilization and dense crop canopy significantly increase the risk of an outbreak. The pathogen spreads rapidly through airborne conidia, allowing the infection to travel across entire fields in a short period.

The economic impact of powdery mildew is significant, leading to yield reductions of up to 30% due to loss of photosynthetic area and grain starvation. Crop management includes the use of resistant cultivars, optimized nutrient application, and timely application of systemic fungicides, particularly those containing triazoles or strobilurins, during the vegetative growth phases.
