While not a pathogenic fungus, these blue-green algae act as significant agricultural pests in greenhouse operations, hydroponic systems, and nurseries by creating dense microbial mats that interfere with vital plant functions.
As photoautotrophic organisms, they thrive in environments with ample light and moisture. Their biological structure allows them to form colonies encased in mucilaginous sheaths, which contribute to their resilience against conventional environmental stressors. In an agricultural setting, they function as opportunistic colonizers that rapidly occupy moist soil surfaces and equipment.
The primary symptom of a Pleurocapsa infestation is the formation of a slimy, dark green to bluish-black crust on the growing medium or greenhouse structures. This physical barrier blocks air exchange, leading to hypoxia in the root zone. Furthermore, the secretion of secondary metabolites by these colonies can create localized toxic conditions that stunt seedling development and suppress overall plant vigor.
