Pluralibacter gergoviae

Pluralibacter gergoviae

Description

Pluralibacter gergoviae is a Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Formerly classified as Enterobacter gergoviae, it has been identified as a significant causative agent of various bacterial diseases, primarily characterized by soft rot and tissue necrosis in susceptible plant hosts.

This pathogen possesses a broad host range, impacting various economically important plants. It is frequently isolated from vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and various leafy greens. Furthermore, the bacterium is often associated with storage rots in tubers and onions, leading to significant post-harvest losses.

Disease symptoms typically manifest as water-soaked spots on foliage, which eventually darken and undergo necrosis. Under high humidity, affected tissues become soft, macerated, and emit a foul odor, which is indicative of bacterial enzymatic activity breaking down the cell walls of the host plant.

Environmental conditions favoring the proliferation of the bacterium include temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C and high moisture levels. The pathogen spreads primarily through contaminated soil, infected seeds, and agricultural machinery. Insects often act as biological vectors, creating entry points for the bacteria into the healthy plant tissue.

The economic impact of this bacterium is significant, as it can cause rapid collapse of plant tissues and systemic infection. In storage facilities, it is particularly dangerous because one infected item can initiate a rot cycle that spreads rapidly through crates, resulting in total crop loss if not identified early.

Control strategies emphasize preventative measures rather than curative treatments. Key practices include the use of disease-free propagation material, maintaining optimal drainage to reduce humidity, and rigorous sanitation of agricultural equipment. In severe cases, copper-based bactericides can be used, provided they are approved for the specific crop and region.
