Pluralibacter pyrinus is a Gram-negative bacterium recognized as a significant plant pathogen that primarily affects fruit-bearing trees, with a focus on the pear species (Pyrus). Previously classified under the Enterobacter genus, this pathogen invades the vascular tissues of the host, leading to systemic infection and severe disruption of sap flow and nutrient transport within the tree.

The primary host for this bacterial pathogen is the pear tree, though related pome fruits may also serve as hosts. The bacteria typically gain entry into the plant through natural openings like stomata or through structural breaches caused by mechanical pruning, insect damage, or environmental factors such as hail. Once inside, the pathogen multiplies rapidly, overwhelming the tree's internal defense mechanisms.

Clinical signs of infection include the wilting of blossoms and young shoots, often occurring rapidly during the growing season. Infected leaves may turn dark or black, appearing scorched. Bark necrosis and the appearance of bacterial ooze (exudate) on the stems or trunks are classic symptoms. A cross-section of an infected branch often reveals a brown discoloration of the vascular bundles, confirming the bacterial blockage.

The development and dissemination of Pluralibacter pyrinus are heavily influenced by meteorological conditions. Warm temperatures and high humidity levels during the spring flush are ideal for bacterial replication. Rainfall and wind-driven water droplets are the primary vectors for local spread, while pollinating insects can transmit the bacteria from bloom to bloom. Orchard hygiene is the most critical factor in preventing an outbreak.

To manage and mitigate the risks associated with this bacterial pathogen, growers should implement the following protocols:

  • Implement strict sanitation measures, including the disinfection of pruning tools with 70% alcohol between every cut.
  • Prune and remove infected branches several inches below the visible point of infection.
  • Apply copper-based bactericides during the dormant season and early growth stages to reduce the bacterial population on the surface.
