Poinsettia free-branching, often referred to as a phytoplasma-induced proliferation, is a serious physiological disorder caused by phytoplasmas. These microscopic pathogens inhabit the plant vascular system, specifically the phloem, where they disrupt the hormonal balance and normal developmental pathways.

The disorder primarily impacts Euphorbia pulcherrima, commonly known as Poinsettia, which is a major crop for commercial floriculture. While the term "free-branching" may sound desirable in some contexts, when induced by pathogens, it results in stunted, poor-quality plants that lack the aesthetic value required for the market.

Symptoms are characterized by the "witches' broom" effect, where the plant produces a dense mass of small, spindly, and deformed lateral shoots. Additionally, infected plants often display reduced bract size, abnormal coloration, and an overall stunted growth pattern, which renders them unsalable.

Transmission occurs predominantly through sap-sucking insect vectors, most notably leafhoppers, which acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected tissue. In greenhouse settings, improper sanitary practices during propagation, such as using infected mother stock for cuttings, can lead to rapid transmission across the entire crop.

Management of the disease relies heavily on strict prevention: sourcing only certified pathogen-free propagules and maintaining rigorous insect control programs to eliminate vectors.
