Description
Potato marginal scorch is a physiological disorder of the potato plant, primarily characterized by the necrosis of the leaf edges. Unlike fungal or viral infections, this condition is non-infectious and is triggered by environmental and nutritional imbalances, most notably a severe deficiency of potassium in the soil during the plant's development stages.
This disorder affects the potato crop specifically, manifesting when the plant's demand for potassium cannot be met by the soil. It is particularly prevalent in sandy soils that are prone to nutrient leaching, as well as in intensive farming systems where soil nutrient levels are not adequately replenished over successive growing seasons.
Symptoms begin as a slight chlorosis (yellowing) at the leaf margins. As the condition progresses, the edges turn brown and become brittle, often resulting in a characteristic upward curling of the leaves. While the symptoms start on older, lower leaves, they can eventually spread to the entire canopy, significantly reducing the plant's ability to photosynthesize.
Development is accelerated by environmental stress, including high temperatures and drought, which impede nutrient uptake. An excess of nitrogen application often exacerbates the problem, as it promotes rapid top growth that outpaces the plant's ability to absorb sufficient potassium to maintain cellular structural integrity and water regulation.
Effective management and protection rely on precise agronomic practices. Essential measures include conducting soil tests to determine potassium levels before planting, applying potassium-based fertilizers in split applications, and ensuring adequate irrigation management to assist in nutrient movement through the soil profile. These strategies help maintain plant vigor and optimize final tuber yield and quality.
