Freesia mosaic virus, formally categorized within the genus Potyvirus (specifically Potyvirus freesiae), is a detrimental plant pathogen that primarily targets species within the Iridaceae family. As a viral pathogen, it induces systemic infection, meaning the virus spreads through the entire vascular system of the host plant, severely compromising its metabolic functions and growth capacity.

The host range is centered on the freesia plant, which is highly susceptible to this infection. The virus particles reside in the plant tissues and are frequently sequestered within the corms. This makes corm propagation a significant risk factor, as infected tubers serve as the primary reservoir for the pathogen, allowing the virus to persist from one growing season to the next without visible resistance.

Symptoms of the infection are characteristically visual: leaves develop distinct yellow or light green mottling and mosaic patterns, often accompanied by leaf distortion or stunted development. In floral parts, the virus causes irregular color breaking, where petals develop streaking or fading, rendering the flowers commercially unsellable and reducing the overall vitality of the plant.

The spread of the virus occurs via two main pathways: biological vectors and mechanical transmission. Aphids act as the primary vectors, transferring the virus between plants while feeding on infected sap. Additionally, humans contribute to the spread by using contaminated tools (like pruning shears or knives) during harvest and propagation, which transfer the viral sap from an infected plant to a healthy one.

Management of the Freesia mosaic virus necessitates a strict adherence to phytosanitary protocols. Since there is no curative treatment for infected plants, the focus must be on rigorous sanitation: identifying and rogueing out symptomatic plants immediately to prevent further spread. Growers should prioritize the purchase of virus-free certified stocks and implement consistent insect pest management programs to eliminate aphid populations within the planting area.
