Description
Proteus is a genus of gram-negative bacteria that function as opportunistic pathogens, causing severe tissue degradation known as soft rot in various agricultural crops. These bacteria utilize enzymes to break down the middle lamella of plant cells, leading to a rapid loss of structural integrity.
A wide variety of crops are susceptible to this pathogen, particularly those with high moisture content. Target hosts include root vegetables such as carrots and beets, bulb crops like onions and garlic, and fleshy fruits such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, especially when they sustain physical damage.
Symptoms are easily recognizable: the infected tissue becomes soft, mushy, and often discolored. This necrotic process is frequently accompanied by a foul-smelling odor caused by the anaerobic breakdown of plant proteins. The decay can spread rapidly throughout the entire plant or fruit within a very short timeframe.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the outbreak of Proteus-related rot. High relative humidity and warm temperatures create an ideal habitat for bacterial proliferation. Spread often occurs through contaminated soil, splashing irrigation water, and insect vectors that create entry wounds on the plant epidermis.
Management practices focus on prevention and hygiene. Key measures include maintaining optimal aeration in storage facilities to prevent moisture buildup, practicing crop rotation to reduce bacterial load in the soil, and handling produce with care to avoid bruising. Immediate removal and destruction of infected plant materials are essential to curb the spread of the disease.
