In the context of agriculture and commercial mycology, this organism acts as a predator that targets the mycelium of cultivated fungi, making it a significant biotic stressor for mushroom production.

The causative agent belongs to the protostelid group. It feeds by surrounding and engulfing the hyphae of the host fungus, causing localized lysis and death of the mycelial cells. This biological interaction is categorized as parasitic, as the myxomycete relies entirely on the fungal host for nutrient acquisition during its vegetative stage.

Symptoms of an infection include a sudden reduction in the growth rate of the mushroom mycelium and a visible change in texture. The infected areas often appear grey or watery, as the hyphal network is decimated. Over time, the affected substrate may lose its structural integrity, appearing slimy or degraded, which prevents the formation of fruiting bodies.

Development and spread are facilitated by environmental factors such as excessive moisture, inadequate ventilation, and high temperatures within the growing facility. These conditions allow the amoeboid phase of the organism to move rapidly across the substrate surface, colonizing new areas of healthy mushroom mycelium.

  • Maintain optimal environmental parameters to discourage slime mold proliferation.
