Description

Pseudobulb and root rot is a devastating disease affecting various orchid species, characterized by the rapid decay of succulent plant parts. The primary pathogens involved are typically fungi like Fusarium oxysporum or Phytophthora species, which penetrate through compromised root systems or mechanical damage on the pseudobulbs.

Orchids of the Cattleya genus are particularly susceptible to this infection due to their physiological structure. Since they store energy in their thickened pseudobulbs, any pathogen invading these tissues can rapidly compromise the health of the entire plant, leading to stunted growth or total systemic collapse.

Early clinical signs include yellowing leaves that fail to respond to hydration, followed by the browning and softening of the roots. As the disease progresses, the base of the pseudobulbs becomes mushy, watery, or blackened. If a bacterial component is involved, the tissue may emit a foul smell, indicating advanced rot.

The development of the disease is highly correlated with poor cultural practices, such as excessive watering, poor drainage, and low air circulation around the root zone. High humidity and warmth stimulate the proliferation of spores, which can easily spread to healthy plants via water splashes or contaminated tools during maintenance.

To control the spread, it is essential to isolate affected plants immediately. The standard intervention involves removing the rotted tissue with a sterile knife, treating the remaining healthy tissue with a fungicide or hydrogen peroxide, and repotting the plant into a fresh, well-aerated substrate. Prevention focuses on maintaining proper hygiene and avoiding water accumulation in the crown or root zone.
