Description
Pseudomonad diseases are a group of plant infections caused by bacteria belonging to the Pseudomonadaceae family. These Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria are among the most destructive pathogens in agriculture worldwide. They are characterized by their ability to thrive in various environments, colonizing both the interior tissues of plants and the rhizosphere.
These pathogens affect a vast array of host plants, ranging from horticultural crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers to fruit trees and ornamental species. Infection typically occurs through natural openings such as stomata or hydathodes, or through wounds caused by pruning, mechanical harvesting, or insect feeding. Once inside, the bacteria multiply rapidly, secreting enzymes that degrade plant cell walls.
Key symptoms include water-soaked lesions on leaves and stems, which eventually turn necrotic and may be surrounded by a yellow halo. Severe infections can lead to bacterial wilt, stem cankers, and fruit rot. In humid conditions, a characteristic milky-white or yellowish bacterial ooze may be visible on the surface of the infected tissue, which helps in the transmission of the disease.
The development of these diseases is highly dependent on environmental factors, primarily high humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Persistent rainfall or overhead irrigation provides the necessary conditions for the bacteria to spread from plant to plant. The pathogen can survive for extended periods in infected seeds, soil, and crop debris, making sanitation a critical management component.
Integrated management is essential for controlling Pseudomonad diseases, as chemical options are often curative rather than preventative. Growers should focus on using pathogen-free seeds, resistant varieties, and rigorous crop rotation. Furthermore, implementing strict sanitation protocols, such as disinfecting tools and removing infected plants, significantly reduces the primary inoculum level in the field.
