Description
The causative agent of this disease is the bacterium Pseudomonas caricapapayae. It is a significant phytopathogen known for causing bacterial spotting on papaya plants. This infection can severely impact the physiological health of the plant and result in substantial losses in both fruit quality and overall yield.
The primary host for this pathogen is the papaya plant (Carica papaya). The infection can manifest across various parts of the plant, including leaves, leaf stalks (petioles), and fruit. It is particularly devastating in orchards located in tropical regions where environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of the bacterium.
Initial symptoms are characterized by small, water-soaked spots on the leaves, which eventually enlarge and turn necrotic or dark brown in color. When the fruit is affected, the lesions develop into distinct sunken spots or ulcers. In humid environments, the bacterium can produce an exudate on the surface of the lesions, facilitating further transmission.
The development and spread of Pseudomonas caricapapayae are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures. The bacteria enter the plant tissues through stomata or wounds caused by insect feeding, pruning, or heavy winds. Once inside, the pathogen colonizes the intercellular spaces, leading to tissue collapse.
Effective management and prevention of the disease include the following strategies:
- Planting certified disease-free seeds and resistant papaya varieties.
- Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
- Removing and destroying infected plant debris to reduce the local inoculum source.
- Applying copper-based bactericides preventively, especially during the rainy season.
- Implementing rigorous hygiene practices for tools used during pruning to prevent mechanical spreading of the bacteria.
