Pseudomonas kitaguniensis is a species of gram-negative aerobic bacteria identified as a plant pathogen. It belongs to a diverse group of pseudomonads known for their ability to colonize plant tissues and cause significant economic losses in agriculture. The pathogen acts by releasing enzymes that degrade plant cell walls, leading to tissue necrosis and systemic infection.

This bacterium primarily targets various agricultural crops, including vegetable and nursery plants. Infection often begins in the rhizosphere or through wounds on the leaf surface. Once inside, the bacteria multiply rapidly within the intercellular spaces, interfering with nutrient uptake and the overall physiological health of the plant.

Symptoms of Pseudomonas kitaguniensis infection typically manifest as irregular brown leaf spots, often surrounded by a chlorotic or oily halo. Affected areas may progress into soft rot, causing wilting of shoots and stunted growth. In severe cases, the entire plant can collapse, especially under high humidity levels.

Development and spread are strongly correlated with environmental factors. High moisture levels, frequent overhead irrigation, and stagnant air promote the rapid multiplication of the pathogen. Optimal temperatures for the bacteria generally range from 20°C to 28°C, which are common during the active growing season.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. This includes strictly sanitizing agricultural equipment to prevent cross-contamination, ensuring proper soil drainage, and maintaining adequate spacing to prevent excessive humidity around the foliage. Chemical controls, such as copper-based bactericides, may be used as a preventive measure in high-risk areas.
