Description
Pseudonocardiosis is a plant disease caused by members of the Pseudonocardiaceae family. These actinomycetes are gram-positive, filamentous bacteria that can inhabit soil environments and, under favorable conditions, invade the root systems of various plant species, acting as opportunistic pathogens.
The disease primarily manifests as root rot and vascular necrosis. Once inside the root tissues, the bacteria disrupt the plant's vascular integrity, preventing the effective translocation of water and essential nutrients from the soil to the upper parts of the plant, which leads to physiological wilting.
The host range includes a wide variety of horticultural and agricultural crops. Typical signs of infection involve stunted growth, premature yellowing of lower leaves, chlorosis, and the development of brown, decaying lesions on the root cortex, which can be observed during the early stages of plant development.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture levels and suboptimal aeration. The resilience of Pseudonocardiaceae allows them to persist in the soil for extended periods as saprophytes on organic matter, making them difficult to eradicate once they are established in a growing area.
Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach, focusing on preventive strategies. Key measures include rotating susceptible crops with non-hosts, ensuring proper drainage in the field or greenhouse, and utilizing biological control agents. Chemical sterilization is rarely used, as it is often detrimental to beneficial soil microflora.
