Description

Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum is a highly destructive soil-borne bacterium that causes bacterial wilt in a wide range of plant species. Previously grouped within the Ralstonia solanacearum species complex, it is now recognized as a distinct pathogen. The bacteria colonize the xylem vessels of the host plant, producing extracellular polysaccharides that physically obstruct water and nutrient transport.

This pathogen has an exceptionally broad host range, infecting over 200 plant species. It is particularly devastating to solanaceous crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Beyond these, it poses a significant threat to industrial crops such as tobacco and various ornamental plants, leading to severe economic losses globally in both field and greenhouse production.

The primary clinical symptom is rapid wilting of leaves, which often remains green at the initial stage. As the disease progresses, the plants undergo permanent wilting and eventually collapse. A critical diagnostic feature is the bacterial streaming observed when a cross-section of an infected stem is suspended in water, as well as the dark brown discoloration of the vascular system visible in stems and tubers.

The development and spread of Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum are heavily favored by warm, humid conditions. It is a persistent pathogen capable of surviving in the soil, in irrigation water, and within alternative weed hosts for extended periods. Transmission typically occurs through the movement of contaminated soil, infected vegetative propagules, agricultural machinery, and contaminated water sources during irrigation.

Management of the disease requires an integrated approach due to the lack of effective curative chemical treatments. Key strategies include:

  • Utilizing disease-free, certified seed and planting materials.
  • Implementing strict quarantine protocols to prevent entry into non-infested areas.
  • Applying crop rotation with non-host crops and maintaining weed-free fields.
  • Ensuring proper sanitation of all farm equipment and tools between operations.
  • Managing soil drainage and irrigation water quality to minimize the environment for infection.
