Ralstonia syzygii

Description

Ralstonia syzygii is a serious bacterial plant pathogen responsible for causing vascular wilt in various plant species. As a systemic disease, it colonizes the xylem of the plant, physically blocking the transport of water and nutrients, which inevitably leads to wilting and eventual death of the affected crops.

The carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) is the most economically significant host for this bacterium. The pathogen causes devastating losses in greenhouse flower production. Besides carnations, Ralstonia syzygii can infect a range of other plants, particularly in warmer climates, making it a constant threat to commercial nurseries and agricultural production.

Early symptoms typically manifest as sudden wilting of the lower leaves, often occurring during the hottest parts of the day, followed by full wilting as the infection progresses. Infected stems often show browning or darkening of the internal vascular tissue. In advanced stages, the roots may decay, and a bacterial ooze can sometimes be observed on cut surfaces.

The development of Ralstonia syzygii is favored by high temperatures and high soil moisture levels. The pathogen is primarily spread through contaminated planting material, such as infected cuttings, as well as via contaminated irrigation water, tools used for pruning, or mechanical injuries to the roots and stems that allow the bacteria to enter.

Control of this pathogen is extremely difficult, emphasizing the critical need for strict sanitation.

  • Implement rigorous sanitation protocols, including the disinfection of tools with effective antimicrobial agents.
  • Immediately rogue out and destroy infected plants along with their surrounding soil.
