Description

Rathayibacter is a genus of Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria responsible for severe plant diseases, most notably bacterial galls and wilting in various cereals. These pathogens are classified as significant quarantine pests, posing a global threat to wheat and barley production due to their ability to survive in both seeds and the soil.

The host range of Rathayibacter includes essential cereal crops and several grass species. The disease mechanism often involves a complex relationship with nematodes, where the nematode creates wounds in the plant tissue, allowing the bacteria to colonize the host and form galls, which replace healthy seeds within the grain head.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as twisted or distorted leaves, stunted growth of stems, and the replacement of healthy grains with dark, hardened galls filled with bacterial masses. In severe cases, the infected plants exhibit chlorosis and systemic wilting, leading to complete crop failure in localized areas if left unchecked.

Development and spread are favored by cool, wet conditions, which are ideal for bacterial movement and colonization. The primary vector for long-distance dissemination is infected seed stock. Once introduced to a field, the bacteria rely on soil moisture and the presence of vector nematodes to persist and spread throughout the subsequent growing seasons.

Management strategies are heavily focused on exclusion and prevention. Because established bacterial infections are difficult to treat with antibiotics or fungicides, farmers must prioritize the use of pathogen-free, certified seeds and practice effective crop rotation. Immediate reporting to agricultural authorities is required if any galls are discovered to prevent an epidemic.
