Description

Red gall disease is a distinct plant pathology caused by the parasitic chytrid fungus Synchytrium vaccinii. This organism acts as an obligate biotroph, specifically targeting the aerial tissues of susceptible host plants, which triggers the formation of abnormal, hypertrophied growths commonly known as galls.

The primary agricultural host for this pathogen is the American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon). While the fungus does not typically kill the host plant outright, the resulting deformities can severely hamper vegetative growth and significantly reduce the overall commercial yield of the cranberry bog.

The most prominent symptoms are the appearance of small, bright red, fleshy galls that emerge on stems, leaves, and occasionally floral parts. These structures disrupt the normal vascular function and physiological processes of the plant, often leading to stunted growth and a general decline in the plant's health and vigor.

The development and spread of Synchytrium vaccinii are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high moisture levels. Zoospores, which are the primary infectious stage of the fungus, require thin films of water on plant surfaces to migrate and infect new, healthy tissues during the growing season.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and sanitation. Key strategies include:

  • Ensuring proper drainage to minimize stagnant surface water.
  • Maintaining optimal planting density to promote airflow.
