Cranberry gall fungus (Synchytrium vaccinii) is an obligate parasitic microorganism classified within the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Chytridiomycota. As a specific plant pathogen, it primarily infects members of the Ericaceae family, particularly cultivated cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon), making it a notable concern for berry growers worldwide.
The pathogen is responsible for a condition known as red gall disease. It manifests through the formation of conspicuous red or brown galls on leaves, stems, and occasionally blossoms. These abnormal growths are caused by the pathogen stimulating uncontrolled cellular proliferation within the plant host, which severely disrupts the plant's structural integrity and normal physiological functions.
