Renibacteriosis, often referred to as Bacterial Kidney Disease (BKD), is a chronic, systemic infection caused by the gram-positive bacterium Renibacterium salmoninarum. This pathogen is a major concern in salmonid aquaculture worldwide, leading to significant economic losses. The disease is characterized by its ability to persist within the host cells, making it difficult to eradicate once it establishes in a population.
The causative agent, Renibacterium salmoninarum, is a slow-growing, gram-positive rod. It is a facultative intracellular pathogen capable of invading host tissues and evading the immune system. The disease develops as a chronic, progressive condition, where bacteria spread through the blood and lymph, eventually forming granulomatous lesions in various internal organs.
The primary hosts affected by this pathogen are salmonid species, including trout and salmon. While the disease is primarily associated with aquaculture, its impact extends to wild populations when escapees introduce the pathogen into natural habitats. Understanding the host-pathogen interaction is essential for managing health in high-density farming systems.
Symptoms of renibacteriosis are highly characteristic and usually involve the formation of white, necrotic granulomas in the kidneys, which is why the disease is commonly known as bacterial kidney disease. External signs may include abdominal swelling, exophthalmia (pop-eye), and the appearance of skin ulcers or hemorrhages. Internally, the spleen and liver may appear enlarged, with grayish membranes covering the organs.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the infection. The optimal temperature for the bacteria is between 10°C and 18°C. Transmission occurs both horizontally through direct contact or contaminated water and vertically from infected broodstock to their offspring via the eggs. High stocking densities exacerbate the transmission rate, making effective management of water quality and fish stress levels vital.
Prevention and control measures are centered on strict biosecurity and diagnostic monitoring. Producers must use specific pathogen-free (SPF) eggs and perform regular screening of broodstock for the presence of the bacteria. Controlling the disease also involves optimizing water filtration systems, maintaining appropriate stocking densities, and utilizing prophylactic antibiotic treatments when necessary to mitigate the risk of severe outbreaks.
