Description
Renibacterium salmoninarum is the etiological agent of Bacterial Kidney Disease (BKD), a systemic infection that primarily affects salmonid fish species. It is crucial to distinguish this as a significant fish pathogen rather than a plant disease, posing a major challenge to the global aquaculture industry and wild salmonid populations.
The bacterium is a gram-positive, intracellular organism. Its ability to reside within the host's macrophages allows it to persist in the environment and survive within the host for extended periods, effectively evading the fish's natural immune responses and complicating clinical treatment efforts.
Clinical symptoms of the disease are characterized by systemic inflammation and the formation of granulomatous lesions. Externally, fish may display dark skin pigmentation, abdominal swelling due to ascites, and exophthalmia. Internally, the kidneys become swollen and discolored, often covered with pale gray lesions that eventually lead to organ failure.
Transmission occurs through both vertical and horizontal routes. The pathogen can be passed from infected broodstock to offspring via eggs, or spread through water contact and ingestion of infected tissues. Environmental stressors, such as temperature fluctuations and overcrowding, often trigger outbreaks in hatcheries and intensive farming facilities.
Management of BKD relies heavily on stringent biosecurity and proactive surveillance. Because systemic intracellular infection is difficult to clear with antibiotics, prevention is paramount. Essential control measures include:
- Screening broodstock for the presence of the pathogen.
- Culling infected individuals to prevent transmission.
- Maintaining optimal water quality and stocking densities.
- Using pathogen-free water sources for hatcheries.
