Description

Crown gall is a serious plant disease caused by soil-borne bacteria from the Rhizobiaceae family, primarily species of Agrobacterium. These bacteria transform the genetic makeup of the host plant, forcing the cells to produce excessive growth hormones, which leads to the formation of tumors known as galls.

The disease affects a vast range of plants, including stone fruits, pome fruits, grapes, and various ornamental crops like roses. Infection typically occurs through open wounds on the roots or the crown, caused by nursery operations, soil pests, or natural growth splits that provide entry points for the bacteria.

Visible symptoms manifest as swellings or galls appearing near the soil line or on the roots. Initially, these growths are pale, soft, and fleshy; as the plant matures, the galls harden, become woody, and turn dark brown or black as they decompose, spreading the bacteria further into the surrounding soil environment.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease propagation. Wet, poorly drained soils combined with mild temperatures favor the movement and colonization of the bacteria. Once the soil is infested, the pathogen can persist for several years, making it difficult to eradicate and posing a constant threat to newly planted crops.

Effective control strategies focus on prevention, as curative treatments for established infections are limited. Key practices include sourcing disease-free nursery stock, practicing strict sanitation of pruning tools using disinfectant solutions, and managing soil pests to minimize root damage. In heavily infested areas, long-term crop rotation with non-susceptible species is essential to reduce the bacterial population.
