Rhodobacteriosis is a bacterial disease complex involving species of the genus Rhodobacter that can cause systemic infections in various plant species. Although these bacteria are often known for their environmental roles, specific pathogenic strains have been identified that compromise plant health by invading the xylem and disrupting nutrient transport systems.

The host range of this disease is quite broad, including several high-value horticultural crops and ornamental plants. It is particularly problematic in protected cultivation environments, such as greenhouses, where consistent temperature and humidity levels favor the survival and colonization of bacterial populations on plant surfaces.

Clinical signs of infection include chlorosis of the foliage, wilting that occurs despite adequate moisture, and the development of water-soaked lesions that later become necrotic. A distinctive diagnostic feature is the vascular browning visible upon longitudinal stem dissection, accompanied by the exudation of a viscous bacterial ooze under high humidity.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. The pathogen spreads primarily through contaminated water, agricultural machinery, and colonized pruning tools. Furthermore, wounding from insect feeding or manual handling significantly increases the vulnerability of plants to infection.

The economic impact of Rhodobacteriosis can be substantial, leading to stunted plant growth, reduced fruit quality, and significant biomass loss. In severe cases, the disease can lead to total crop failure, necessitating expensive eradication efforts and long-term soil management adjustments to prevent re-establishment of the bacterial population.

Integrated disease management (IDM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pathogen, involving several key strategies:

  • Strict sanitation protocols for all greenhouse equipment and tools.
  • Use of certified, disease-free starting material or seeds.
  • Implementation of optimal ventilation and irrigation management to reduce leaf wetness.
  • Removal and destruction of infected plant material to reduce the primary inoculum load.
  • Application of preventative bactericides or biological control agents.
